June News Round-up
June was another event-packed month for the members
of Keisen Judo Club.
A small group of players went to the Southern Area Junior
and Youth Championships at Crawley's K2 Centre on the 14th
of June. There were a number of creditable performances
with Francesca Allen returning with a Bronze medal. Francesca
had the misfortune to be called to compete in one group,
winning through to the Gold medal position then discovering
that it was the wrong group. She picked herself up from
this disappointment and managed to achieve a Bronze medal
in her correct group.
The club held its quarterly Grading session at East Grinstead's
Wallis Centre on the 20th of June. In all, 26 judoka successfully
graded with 7 novices achieving their first Mon.
The next day, a number of these novices went to the Durrington
Leisure Centre in Worthing for the aptly named "Red
Belt Rumble", a competition reserved solely for the
less experienced players in the region. Most impressive
performance of the day was from Luke Panayi, who won 3
out of his 4 contests to win the Silver medal. Siblings
Lyle and Louie Slocombe and Emma and Scott Ward all got
Bronze medals as did Chris Cummings.
The month was rounded off at the Kent International Competition,
held on the 27th & 28th of June at the Crystal Palace
National Sports Centre. On Saturday, Jessica Plumtree had
a good day, losing only to the eventual Gold medallist,
to gain a Bronze medal. On Sunday, James Draper sailed
through the preliminary pool contests and was doing well
in the finals when he was injured. He still managed a 7th
place in a high quality international field.
