Sussex Trials
Keisen junior players continue to shine by returning from
the Sussex Trials with an impressive tally of three gold
and three bronze medals.
Leon Verrells returned to the county scene after injury
last year to win a bronze medal in the under 30kg group.
Leon held his nerve through a tense golden score fight to
earn third place bronze.
Jenny Braim appearing for the first time in the ultra
light under 25kg group had to fight an opponent in the next
weight group up to win her gold medal, Jennys sister,
Jo Braim, continuing this success with a good result winning
bronze at under 44kg.
In the girls middle weight groups, Elizabeth Draper and
Sophie Cummings both competed in the under 52kg group winning
gold and bronze respectively. Elizabeth, a veteran of previous
Trials events impressed with a dazzling 100 percent record,
deservedly winning gold and becoming Sussex Champion for
the first time.
Sophie also fought well showing some new techniques, and
after a tense but unsuccessful showdown with her team mate
won an excellent bronze.
The event was rounded off with a clinical display from
James Draper who won Gold and became Sussex Champion for
the sixth time in his career. Other notable performances
were made by Keisen players. Max Oulton narrowly missed
out in the under 30kg group but still took a fifth place
and will be remembered for an exceptional ogoshi in his
opening fight. Lyle Slocombe also fought in the under 30kg
group proving to the coaching team that he is now ready
to move up to a new level of competition. Toine Hodgkiss,
appearing at the Trials as a senior for the first time demonstrated
that he is finding his feet at this level and promises to
deliver in future events.
